Book Chapter in Media Architecture Compendium: Digital Placemaking, M. Hank Häusler, Martin Tomitsch, Luke Hespanhol and Gernot Tscherteu (eds.), Stuttgart: Avedition Gmbh , 2017.
While digital placemaking has positive development of our urban environments in sight, oftentimes collaborating with government and stakeholders in strategic efforts to develop urban spaces in direction of becoming democratic, vital, inclusive and building consensus-driven local communities by means of digital implementations and design, urban media art derives from different objectives, oftentimes seeking to challenge the status quo and our sense of agency in it. What can urban media art bring to digital placemaking? In considering this question, I suggest in this chapter that we consider how urban media art may “make place” that facilitates civil disobedience as a culturally constructive premise for agency and ethical awareness in people.
